Effects of the Different Modifiers

The above chart illustrates the lighting effects of the different light modifiers used.

All the shots are taken with the same shutter speed, aperture, ISO and white balance. the camera is mounted on a tripod, with a flash mounted on its hot-shoe. The flash is set at a manual power of 1/4.

As the flash power is fixed, the difference is the exposure of the individual pictures shows the amount of light being stopped down by the different modifiers.

Direct Flash - as one can see, direct flash gives the brightest image, but the shadow is hard and distinct.

Snoot without Honey Comb Grid - A snoot concentrates and narrows the light beam, rapid light fall-out at the outer rim of the light. The shadow is sharp and distinct.

Snoot with Honey Comb Grid - A snoot with honey comb grid further concentrates the light beam. The shadow is sharp and distinct.

Honey Comb (big grid) - A honey comb concentrates the beam of light and projects it forward. The shadow is sharp and distinct, but not as much as if a snoot or snoot with honey comb is used.

Beauty Dish - The beauty dish provides a wide, uniform light with gradual fall-off and soft shadow definition.

Softbox with front baffle - The softbox provides a more controlled and directional light. Very soft shadow and even lighting with gradual fall-off at the edge of the light. The front baffle also gives a slightly warm colour to the image.

Softbox without front baffle - The lighting effect of a softbox without the front baffle is almost the same as direct flash. And because of the design of a softbox, all the light from the flash is being collected and projected forward, there is much lesser escaped/wasted light.

Beauty Dish for strobes has been used by many fashion professionals in their shoots. It has the characteristic of area lighting, yet creating a bright soft light shadows on the models.

As for soft box, it is the light modifier of choice for many portrait shoots. It creates soft light shadows on the models, and also has a big projection area coverage.

Now, both have been miniaturized to flashgun scale, so that all using flashguns can enjoy these wonderful modifiers using your own flashguns instead of on the cumbersome and heavy studio lighting strobes.

How do I order?
Please send an email titled "FlashGenie MailOrder" to flashgenie123 at gmail.com (remove the at and substitute with @) with the following details,

Mode of Payment
Currently we only accept ATM or internet bank transfers through POSB/DBS and UOB/OCBC banks. Payment details will be send to you upon confirmation of your order request.

Kindly make payment within 3 days upon receiving our confirmation, otherwise the order would have deemed cancelled.

Inter-bank transfers might take up to 3 working days for the payment to go through. Eg. POSB/DBS to UOB/OCBC network, or vice versa.

We ship out our items every Tuesday and Saturday.

Shipping and Handling
All items will carry a shipping and handling charge of S$2.00, unless stated otherwise. For registered items (to ensure delivery and accountability), please add S$2.25 per item.

Singpost has great reputation for postal delivery and efficiency. Items are normally delivered within 1-3 days of posting at the post office.

For non-standard weight or heavy items, additional postage charge will be advised separately.

We currently do not ship items overseas, but if you have an order request from anywhere but Singapore, do feel free to email us for quotation.

Welcome to Flashgenie. This is an online shop dedicated to flash accessories that are commonly used for flash photography.

We are a group of photography enthusiasts that started out our journey of fun in the film days. Back in those days, flash accessories are far and few between. Many a times, we have to DIY our own things, like bounce card made from cardboard, flash diffuser made from tissue paper, etc. Things like a flash stand, only comes with the higher end model from the flash manufacturer, some don't even have one that comes when you buy the flash.

After all the years of DIY-ing, we at Flashgenie is dedicated to source for most useful and unique flash accessories. We have our own little research and development for creation of new items, and we have manufacturing partners in Malaysia to provide us with the necessary production support.

We will carry our own products, as well as products from other manufacturers as well.
